CNC Machining vs 3D Printing vs Tooling
Compare manufacturing routes for prototype and low-volume parts using geometry, material, finish, quantities and tooling requirements.
CNC machining
Consider machining when the specified stock material, machined interfaces or cutting access suit the design. Review deep pockets, internal corners and setups. Critical dimensions belong on a drawing and must be confirmed during quotation.
3D printing
Consider additive processes when geometry or design iteration makes them useful. Discuss build orientation, support removal, surface finish and functional material requirements. Printed and machined parts should not be assumed to have identical properties.
Vacuum casting and injection molding
Consider cast or molded parts when the design and repeat quantity justify reviewing tooling. Compare tooling scope, resin, cosmetic requirements, sample approval and secondary operations. The preferred route depends on your actual quotation.
Compare like for like
Use the same CAD revision, quantity, material requirement, finish and inspection scope for each option. Separate tooling and shipping from part costs, and ask what assumptions could change the quotation.
